Seperate user accounts

If I created a new user account on my laptop purely for DJing and literally only installing those items I use for DJing, would it make it smoother to use?

I'm thinking if I install Traktor, Firefox, Icechat, MSN, Oddcast and my folder of tunes to DJ with and nothing else there won't be all the other crap that auto starts when I log in. Is this right or will the computer boot eveyting as normal?

Would be time consuming to do it all only to find it does fuck all, and by and large everything runs smoothly but there are times when little glitches occur which can be annoying when playing to an audience.

Also, would hardware drivers be transfered or would I have to install all the drivers for both soundcards and reconfigure them all again?

Sounds like it might work Bobbo. Except I wouldn't include MSN in the profile.

I expect, if you google about a bit, and find that each profile has a different start-up configuration, this will work. I dunno if you have to actually install the software again tho, maybe just the new profile will dictate what runs of the software already installed.

Not sure about the drivers issue tho.

Let me know what OS you're on, and how you get on with a little googling on the subject. If you can't find an answer easily, I'll try to find out for you myself. There are technical forums I'm registered on where I could ask for you, if need be.

yeah, having less shit running in the background will help
setting up a new profile would help you do this, but remember some programs will be installed for one user or all users...those that are set up for all users will run in all profiles, so you'll have to fiddle with that

drivers will carry across

Or there is the simpler option of disable the run-on-startup option in MSN, do a reboot, and see how you get on.

If I recall there were two msn messangers on xp i.e. the ione you donwloaded and the installed. The one already installed wouldnt always go away regardless of what you did.

Hi all thanks for the suggestions. I tried the seperate user account idea which worked great up until the time i opened Traktor, that the only program where the settings are user specific. I set it up how I thought I'd set it up lat time but it just wasn't right. I've optimised instead and now next to nothing is on auto run at startup except the bare essentials so if I need it i'll open it, if not then sweet

Thanks again for the input
