Phorm

I'm sure i'm not the only one to be keeping half an eye on the 'targeted ads' technology from Phorm. Obviously details are very slow in coming out, but this q+a with phorm's ceo has thrown out some interesting questions...
BadPhorm - When good ISPs go bad!: Phorm's Answers

It doesn't make any difference to me at the moment, but i'm likely to be moving in with ppl who currently use bt! More importantly, will it differentiate between computers? Ie. Will my housemates be targeted with DJing ads or NSFW ads coz i use this forum...

Intriguingly, despite all the negative publicity, it actually sounds positive on the q+a, which i suppose is expected as he's trying to push it!

Anyone else have thoughts on the matter?

Well, if you're gonna get ads, you might as well get ads you're likely to be interested in. Having said that, I could happily live without any ads. I know what I want, and I have no problem finding things for myself if need be.

Of course this is part of the bigger picture of data security/privacy which is a hot topic at the moment. On the same line, you know the turnaround BA did on fingerprinting users of terminal 5. Well, when I heard about it I thought what a good idea, should have been a pretty foolproof security measure. I wish BA had not done a U turn. If I was using that airport terminal I would be much more worried about my safety than about my privacy/data protection rights/whatever.

I know what you mean. I wouldnt have had a problem with BA using my fingerprints while i was in the area and deleting them afterwards. (although not sure it would have served much of a purpose)

As for my internet traffic, I would also rather not have ads, but assuming thats not an option, I would prefer 'safe' ads that arent phishing, but then again, if i'm not gonna click the ads then what is the point? Also if u dont opt out but block webwise ads, do u stop more ads as they'll technically be stopping the others beforehand and only sending theirs?

I work on the theory that most things we do are building customer profiles, think of things like nectar cards or tesco clubcard for example. They know everything you've bought, and have massive amounts of data to profile you with! Nectar especially as its across such a wide range of services...

TBH Fozzy. I couldn't care less that Sainsburys know everything I've ever bought from them. If someone ever wants to try to use my sandwich preference for malicious purposes, good luck to them!

And BTW, the vast majority of ads on the net come from a small number of sources. Doubleclick.net, tradedoubler.com, fastclick.net come to mind. They are all in my Restricted Internet Zone. I get very few popup ads, many of those I do get come up as a blank white box anyway. Many of the websites I browse just have blank spaces where the ads would have been too.
