I'm thinking about jumping ship...pros/cons/leave it ahht mate its not worth it, sort of thing

Try the Ubuntu distribution - it's supposed to take the pain away.

Not tried it myself, though. I'm currently running Suse 9.0 on my fileserver. It's quite an old version.

Have you any experience of unix?

well, in that case, I wouldn't replace what you've got just yet. If you've got an old PC you can stick Linux on that and it'll run fine.

Thing is, the learning curve is probably quite steep from a complete beginner point of view.

On the other hand, I might be making too much of it. I've used unix for 19 years now, so it's second nature to me.

why? macos could just be installed on the current system. theres no need to get anything, except a dick in the bum.
