Sorting my laptop

My radio show last night was ruined by a computer crash.

As a result I will be getting a copy of XP tomorrow and will be reformatting over the weekend. One problem I have thought of is that the DVD drive on my lappy doesn't work so I have USB jobbie. Will I be able to set this to the default booot device?

Also, I will be getting a cooler to keep temperatures low, anyone got any experience of these?

Any thoughts welcome

you need to check in the start up menu if you can change to boot from usb.

Oh well, I've gotten a copy of XP, backed up everything that needs backing up on my external hdd, made sure I have all the CDs/installers for all my programs and downloaded all the drivers for my laptop hardware. Now all that's left is to type Format C into system directory and start again.

See you on the other side (hopefully)

After several false starts, including not formating first (meaning a clean install with all the old crap still on), one where I set a partition of 10gb for system ops but not a partition for the rest (resulting in XP thinking I had a 10gb hdd) I have now got a 10gb partition for XP and a 70gb partition for everything else.

I still have to install all the drives for my various hardware and all the programs I want but I think I'm on the right track!

To not have to do all this shit again I'm going to install everything and set up a recovery ghost

woohoo, he is back.

Installs take less than an hour. It's the drivers and software that take the time.

OK, here's what I don't get...

Everything goes to the 10gb partition. How do I get my programs to install to the partition (called D: ). Also, how do I get stuff like My Documents to be on my the larger partition? Or am I going for a record 4th reinstall in one day and reverting back to one partition of 80gb?
