My 2p is this, make it open to anything mixing wise but make people be honest about it. Using ableton for example to make 4 songs blend seamlessly into each other over 30 minutes is hardly ground breaking. Using ableton to completely deconstruct something and remix everything in it LIVE is special, not that I can do it.
The old way we judged these things was on beatmatching/creativity/tune selction and flow if I remember right. Therefore a software mix would (should really) score low on beatmatching but then if you're using it properly you should score higher for creativity.

Or something like that
that hurts my head. Can the next rule be to ban stabby from suggesting more rules?

Sorry Stabby, it's mashing my head too since I've had a drink.

.... I think the problem for me is that comparing software aided mixes with old school DJing is like comparing apples & oranges.

it's not rocket science is it, using a laptop to dj in the same way as vinyl (ie outro to intro mixes) is boring and should get low marks, using the laptop to loop bits up and fuck about with it is good and should be encouraged
For me it's the end result in the ears of the listener, not the technique used to get there.

I see where you're coming from Stabby. Part of my mind thinks & wants old school rules, and another part thinks this will be a bigger issue for DJ comps as every year passes so we should face it now.

Perhaps keep this comp old school and make an agreement that next comp we do, we thrash this issue out, and have both old school and software together.

yeah like I said earlier, i'll do vinyl or something, it just seems like most competitions are too focused on the actual beatmatching when really that's a tiny part of djing.
Anyway, bring it on losers

I'm losing it tonight, just spent 4 hours mashing abba for god's sake.
