Euphoride. By me.

OK, my first production is at a standard where it's ready to be ripped to shreds by informed, constructive criticism.

Orthodox Heresy - Euphoride

Hope you like the pretentious artist name.

I found the link to take a while to appear to respond, but it streams from the page for you. I should be able to chase up a much better hosting solution this week, if it doesn't work for you.

Sounds a bit Robert Miles to me
Good to hear melody being used to drive a song rather than just production tricks.

I think the biggest let down is the quality of the instruments. I don't know what DAW / VSTi you are using but you need to beef the sounds up quite a bit. I also thought the Piano sound was too grand. Try a more dance orientated patch.

BTW I think there was a couple of dodgy notes in there.

Keep working on it and get back to us

It's great how the melody carries the track.

There are a few discordant notes but it should be easy to sort them out. The sounds need updating a bit, it does sound very Midi. The percussion could be made more lively too.

But you have a good base to start off with!

Well done.

Thanks for the feedback.

It's all done in Reason. I've listened to it again using the Shure earphones I have at work, and all the bass is gone, and it does sound very weedy.

The first lead sound you hear (it's an NN-XT patch) just has some filter automation, a small amount of phasering and a reverb device on it. Any tips for a more 'beefy' sound? Is it a compression thing, or more attack needed? I tried a distortion device, and that didn't sound good at all. Maybe just a completely different patch is needed.

The piano I think just has some reverb.

I should have some time to work on it tonight. Figuring out new sounds is one of the things that really makes my ears bleed.

sounds ok.

The kick is weedy, its punchy enough but lacks sub. try overlaying a pure sub note, probably at around 55hz (B0, of B flat 0 ish).

also, the piano sounds a bit ghey. Ive found that adding a compressor to the piano makes it a whole lot better. try a compression ratio of about 4 to 1, attack time of about 40 to 50 ms, and release of about 100ms or so (play around with this), and boost the overall gain by about 3.5db to cater for the compression.

try it and see what you think. personally I think the result is much more pleasant to listen to.

Cheers, Damo, those tips helped a great deal.

Link not updated, though. I can't get a decent lead sound and now I'm second-guessing the bass-line.

I'm assuming the duff notes you guys heard were in the first bit of breakdown, where I just slapped some chords in, and didn't bother tweaking the bass. I still can't get the bass to work with it properly, and I think it's because of the low-pass filter on the bassline during that section. I might just cut those 8 bars out. I don't think they go with the rest of the track.

I downloaded some refill patches from the Propellerheads website. I had no clue before about how to use Reason's Combinator. Wierd stuff was happening to certain controls in these patches, and I couldn't figure it out until I noticed the programmer button. Fookin' hell, that's a sophisticated device. I think I might be using it a lot now.
